Wit & Wisdom Speaker Series: Gospels in Glass-Stained Glass Windows in Missouri Churches
Presenters: Robyn Burnett and Ken Luebbering
Cost: Free
Stained glass church windows-their history, the artists who created them, the donors who paid for them, and the faithful who worship beneath them-tell much about the history of Missouri. Learn about immigration glassmakers who came to Missouri and the windows that demonstrate our links to a larger world.

Using our traveling exhibit "Hope and Heartbreak: The Many Faces of Childhood," participants will learn about child labor and child rights during the Industrial Revolution. RSVP required.

At the Movies: "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas"
Cost: Free
Based on the novel by John Boyne, this movie is set during World War II from the perspective of Bruno, an eight-year-old son of an Army Commandant at a concentration camp. His forbidden friendship with a Jewish boy on the other side of the camp fence has startling and unexpected consequences.
This film will be shown in the Churchill's Finest Hour (WWII) room.

Children's Program: German-American Children in Internment Camps
Cost: Free
Requirement: Children ages 6-12
In conjunction with our traveling exhibit, "Vanished: German-American Civilian Internment, 1941-1948," we are going to learn how German-American children coped during their stay in these internment camps. We will also make some traditional German handicrafts, like the ones internees made.

Community Learning Program: German Bobbin Lace Making
Presenter: Linda Hickman, folk artist
Cost: $5.00
Learn from a local folk artist, Linda Hickman, on how to make traditional German bobbin lace or kloppelei. Hickman learned this material art form from Christa Robbins who was raised in then East Germany, married an American soldier, and relocated to the Jefferson City area. Christa told stories from the war and how it effected the kloppel (lace) school. Perhaps Linda will share some these stories with us...

Charity Affair II: Harvest Festival
Cost: Entrance fee $6.00/(ages 2-12), free (ages 13 & up)
Join us in Latshaw Plaza to celebrate the Church of St. Mary. This family friendly event will have all sorts of fun activities including make-our-own candy apple, kettle korn, face painting, and pumpkin carving. All proceeds go towards our yearlong fundraiser, which is raising money to make repairs to the Church.

Help us decorate our honor tree! Send a photograph of your loved one who is currently in the military or is a veteran. Make sure to send a copy as pictures will not be returned. The tree, located in the Museum foyer, will be up from December 1-January 7.

Children's Program: Berlin Wall

Requirement: Children ages 6-12
On November 9, 1989, the Berlin Wall camp down. Today's program will teach the children about the Berlin Wall, its history beginning in 1961 and ending with its historic fall. Afterwards, we will make our own Berlin Wall, experimenting with graffit. RSVP required.

At the Movies: When the Wall Came Tumbling Down
Cost: Free
This compelling documentary shows what really happened during those perilous, pivotal hours. General Secretary Gorbachev and President Bush; the French and the British governments; Chancellor Kohl and General Secretary Krenz; foreign secretaries, ministers, and high-ranking officers from both sides (some speaking out for the first time), along with journalists such as NBC News Correspondent Tom Brokaw, describe first-hand what occurred behind the scenes.
This film will be shown in the Churchill's Finest Hour (WWII) room.

Wit & Wisdom Speaker Series: The Phoenix of Aldermanbury: The History and Architecture of the Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Aldermanbury"
Presenter: Dr. Bill Young, Westminster College faculty

Gain insight into this wonderful 12th century church. Dr. Young, a local expert of the Church of St. Mary, will give an intriguing presentation on its heroic, and two-times, mythical life. This program will be held in St. Mary's so that attendees may see visually the architecture discussed.

Lessons and Carols
The Festival of Lessons and Carols will be held at the Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Aldermanbury, Churchill Museum, at Westminster College. Patterned after the festival held at King's College, Cambridge University, England, the Festival of Lessons and Carols beautifully tells the Christmas Story in word and song. The service will feature Prairie Strings, a professional string quartet from Columbia, and various student musicians and singers. The service is held in the delightfully decorated Church of St. Mary, the Virgin, Aldermanbury. The program is free and the public are invited and encouraged to attend. A reception will follow in the Churchill Museum.

Children's Program: Women in the War

Requirement: Children ages 6-12
When the United States entered World War II, 12 million women were already working. By the end of the war, the number was up to 18 million. A propaganda campaign began to promote the importance of the war effort and to lure women into the workforce. Children will learn about this campaign and its poster child "Rosie the Riveter." Domestic. Shop girl. Waitress. Cook...Those were the jobs for women in the 1930's -- when they could get work. Suddenly the U.S. entry into World War II created an unprecedented demand for new workers. Notions of what was proper work for women changed overnight. Thousands of posters and billboards appeared calling on women to "Do the Job He Left Behind." Rosie the Riveter was born -- the symbol of working women during World War II.

Some say photography began out of necessity, a necessity to document wars. Today we will learn about documentary photography. Children will make (and use) one of the first cameras - a pinhole camera. RSVP required.

Community Learning Program: Photography during Wartimes
Presenter: Kevin Dingman, Westminster College faculty
Cost: $5.00
Photography, presented to the public in 1839, was believed to create images that were accurate representations of the world. In 1859, it was predicted that photography would be able to visually document future wars correctly by generating precise documentation of battles, fortifications, landscapes, soldiers, and military officers.
Participants should bring family photos from wartimes to share with the group. This is a hands-on presentation. Topics to be discussed include: photography and war, photojournalism, and the basics of photography. RSVP required.

Presenter: Charles Machon, Historical Services Coordinator, Museum of Missouri Military History
Cost: Free
The Museum of Missouri Military History covers the history of all Missouri military, from the Missouri National Guard in 1808 through both World Wars to present day. Tonight's presentation will feature Missouri State Guard members who were the security for Winston Churchill's Fulton visit on March 5, 1946. Come learn how these Missouri military personnel protected one of the greatest world leaders. Original documents, maps, and pictures will be shown.
