Summer Break

We will take a break from all public programming from June 14, 2010 through August 31, 2010. We use this time to evaluate previous programs and create the next year's calendar of events.

Traveling Exhibit: "Wartime Escape: Margret and H.A. Rey's Journey from France"
Cost: price of admission

More than three generations of Americans have grown up reading the stories of an irrepressible little brown monkey known in this country as “Curious George.” But few people know about the incredible journey made by his creators, Margret and H.A. Rey, to escape the Nazi invasion of Paris at the start of World War II. Stashing a few precious belongings and manuscripts in their knapsacks and the baskets of their bicycles, the Jewish couple fled Paris in June 1940, starting a five month odyssey by bike, train, and boat that would eventually bring them to American shores in October 1940.

Traveling Exhibit: "Overcoming Tolerance", created by West Boulevard Elementary 5th graders
Cost: price of admission

The fifth grade class from West Boulevard Elementary school in Columbia, Missouri created this mini-museum. Our second year hosting their museum, this year's exhibition discusses the concept of intolerance. This is a must see show!

Educator's Open House & Gallery Opening
Cost: Free

Open to any educator, administrator, or student teacher. This open house is your opportunity to explore the museum and its newest traveling exhibit. Attendees also have the chance to look at current and new lesson plans. Special guests are the West Boulevard Elementary 5th graders.

Children's Program: Overcoming Intolerance

Cost: $5.00

Open to any child ages 6-12. Using our temporary exhibit from West Boulevard Elementary, children will learn about overcoming intolerance and will apply this knowledge to a craft project. Reservations are required.

Film Screening: "The Gathering Storm"

Cost: Free

This HBO Films drama is a love story offering an intimate look inside the marriage of Winston and Clementine Churchill during a particularly troubled, though little-known, moment in their lives. Run time: 96 minutes

Wit & Wisdom Speaker Series: WWII Home Front Posters
6:00pm-7:00pm
Presenter: Jay Antle, Johnson County Community College, Department of History
Cost: Free

During World War II, posters were a common persuasive advertising tool. Dr. Antle will suggest how the posters were important in making every citizen a soldier and connecting Americans to the war effort. Audience members will also see how the posters progressed and changed over time.

Third Annual Winston Churchill Student Essay Contest

Open to any high school student, this essay contest provides students the opportunity to write a scholarly essay on a Winston Churchill topic. Prizes are awarded to top four essayists. Click here for more information.

Children's Program: Food Rationing

Cost: $5.00

Open to any child ages 6-12. During World War II, food was rationed for three primary reasons. Come find out those reasons! Learn how to use ration books and create your own tabletop victory garden. Reservations are required.

Community Learning Program: Learn How to Write a National Register Nomination

Cost: $5.00

Do you live in a house that is at least 50 years old? Have you ever wondered if your home or local business could be saved (or honored) by placing it on the National Register for Historic Places? Learn from a local preservationst tips and tricks on writing your own National Register for Historic Places nomination. Discussion topics include: what makes a building eligible, filling out the nomination form, where to go for help, and more! Reservations are required.

Holiday Honor Tree

Help us decorate our honor tree again! Send a photograph of your loved one who is currently in the military or is a veteran. Pictures of those that have passed away are also welcome. Make sure to send a copy as pictures will not be returned. The tree will be displayed from December 1 - January 7.

November 1 - January 1, 2011
Operation Baby Shower

Operation Baby Shower is a St. Louis, Missouri non-profit organization that recognizes and honors the sacrifices military families make by producing and coordinating unit-wide baby showers and "showers in a box" for pregnant and expecting military families in deployment or high stress situations. In honor of our own Honor Tree celebration, the Museum will also honor these military moms.

Between November 1, 2010 and January 1, 2011, the Museum will have a donation box set up for community members to drop off baby shower donations. On January 8, 2011, we will take these donations and make "showers in a box" to send to military baby showers.

Honoring our Military: Veterans Day

Today we celebrate and honor our military personnel. Come experience one of the only world history museums in Missouri. All veterans and military personnel will receive free museum admission. We'll also take your picture and add it to our Honor Tree.

27th Annual Victorian Christmas Fundraiser

It has been 27 years since the Friends of the National Churchill Museum hosted their first Victorian Christmas celebration. Join us this year for our annual holiday sale. Featured items include food goods, handbags, Christmas ornaments, kids' items, and more!

Children's Program: Radio Program, Part I

Cost: $5.00

Open to any child ages 6-12. Although radio programs were not visual, they featured a wide array of sound effects to give the listene an authentic feel of the scene. Participants will create their own radio adventure program! Reservations are required.

Wit & Wisdom Speaker Series: "Where Do I Belong? Holocaust Diaries and Identity"

Presenter: Dr. Sam Goodfellow, Westminster College, Department of History
Cost: Free

The most well-known Holocaust diary is, of course, Anne Frank's diary. Holocaust diaries are a compelling read, capturing as they do the immediate experience of the writer. A key issue for the diarists is identity. How should they interact with their non-Jewish friends in the changed circumstances of the war? Could they still be French or German and also be Jewish? Many of them also struggled with their Jewish identity which was defined more by Hitler than by Jews. Attend this lecture to hear Dr. Goodfellow speak on a variety of holocaust diaries and the concept of identity.

Winston Churchill's Birthday

Today is Winston Churchill's birthday! Born November 30, 1874, Churchill would have been 136 years old today. Visit the Museum to learn what Churchill was like growing up. The first 100 visitors will receive a slice of cake and a picture taken for our Birthday Wall.

Children's Program: Radio Program, Part II

Open to any child ages 6-12. A continuation of November's children's program, this month we will put our radio program on the air! We will hold a live recording with an audience. Copies will be made for participants to take home. Open only to those who came to the November program.

At the Movies: "A Farewell to Arms"

Cost: Free

Based on the semi-autobiography by Ernest Hemingway, "A Farewell to Arms" follows an American soldier and an English nurse who share an ill-fated romance in World War I. (1932) Run time: 80 minutes

Traveling Exhibit: Outstanding Women of Missouri History
Cost: Price of admission

Honors Missouri women who have received the Outstanding Women of Missouri Award. The award recognizes Missouri women whose fortitude, persistence, and judgment led them to distinguish themselves in their chosen profession or areas of service.

Children's Program: The Volunteer - Clementine Churchill
10am-12pm
Cost: Free

Open to any child ages 6-12. Today's program will discuss Clementine Churchill and all her charitable contributions. During World War II, she was the chairwoman for a number of non-profit organizations. We will also learn about the importance of volunterring through writinga  story for the University Children's Hospital. Reservations are required.

Wit & Wisdom Speaker Series: "Differences Between Service Learning and Community Service"

Find out the difference between service learning and community service, why service learning is important, and how you can encourage service learning within your school or workplace.

Community Learning Program: Operation Baby Shower

We will gather the baby shower donationsw that were collected and make "showers in a box" for Operation Baby Shower, a non-profit organization that honors pregnant military families. This is a great volunteering opportunity. I encourage you to bring a family member of friend! Reservations are required.

Children's Program: History of Valentine's Day

Open to any child ages 6-12. There are various legends telling the story of Valentine's Day. Hear some of these folk tales and make your own traditional Valentine's Day card. Reservations are required.

Traveling Exhibit: Women in the Military - A Jewish Perspective
Cost: Price of admission

The exhibit profiles Jewish female veterans of U.S. conflicts from the Civil War to the Gulf War. Through their stories, the exhibit brings to the forefront the vital role women played in the contribution to America's war efforts throughout our history.

Children's Program: Women in the Military

Cost: Free

Open to any child ages 6-12. Using the new traveling exhibit, we will talk about the roles women played in the military. We will take on the role of a military woman, looking at primary sources to tell others of their experience. Reservations are required.

Dedication of Sinews of Peace Sculpture

In honor of the 65th anniversary of Churchill's "Sinews of Peace" address, the Churchill  Museum will dedicate a sculpture entitled "Sinews of Peace". More information will be released closer to date.

At the Movies: "Free A Man to Fight: Women Soldiers of World War II"

Cost: Free

The dire manpower shortage of WWII forced the United States military to open its doors to women. 1942 became the first time in history that women were actually recruited for military service. 400,000 women volunteered, the highest number in U.S. history. By the time the war ended, they were serving in over 200 different types of jobs considered to be man's work. Their efforts changed themselves, society and the military forever. Run time: 55 minutes

Wit & Wisdom Speaker Series: "Dying to be Pretty: the Poisonous Victorian Quest for Beauty"

Presenter: Kenneth H. Winn, Former State Archivist of Missouri, Current Washington University of St. Louis teacher
Cost: Free

Taking arsenic to whiten feminine skin was a fashionable Victorian beauty secret. Unfortunately, it also opened the door to murder. This talk traces the rise and fall of arsenic as a beauty aid among British and American women and the assistance this pretty poison gave men wishing to dispense with troublesome wives.

Traveling Exhibit: 11th Annual Missouri Watercolor National Exhibition

Enjoy one of the nation's top 15 watercolor exhibitions. This is a judged competition with 80 artists displaying their work in our Anson Cutts Gallery.

Children's Program: Stained Glass
11am-12pm
Cost: $5.00

Open to any child ages 6-12. Many historic buildings you see have stained glass windows. Children will learn the reasons behind making windows out of stain glass, the different types of glass, and the techniques used to create them. Participants will make their own stained glass window. Reservations are required. One parent must accompany their child.

Community Learning Program: Stained Glass - Copper Foil

Cost: $75.00
Location: Village Glass Works, Columbia Missouri

Only 7 seats available. Register early!

This special 5-hour class will teach you all the basics. Located off site at the Village Glass Works in Columbia, Missouri, this workshop will provide you with a stained glass suncatcher and all the skills needed to create larger pieces on your own. The cost of the class incudes the instruction, use of tools, and all the "expendables", including scrap glass, foil, chain, and cane. Reservations are required.

The Crosby Kemper Lectureship was established in 1979 by a grant from the Enid and Crosby Kemper Foundation of Kansas City, Missouri. Lecture series speakers are authorities on British History or Sir Winston Churchill at the National Churchill Museum at Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri.

Family Fun: Knight for Hire

Presenter: Karl M. Kindt III
Cost: Free

Fun for all ages! Fun stories, first-person reenactments, and a sword demonstration!

Get a behind-the-scenes "tour" of a knight's life. Learn why a man became a knight and about his armor and what it represents. Sir Kindt will also share a typical day in the life of a knight. Bring the grandparents, grandchildren, and everyone in between.

Traveling Exhibit: Lives Remembered - Photographs of a Small Town in Poland 1897-1939
Cost: price of admission

"Lives Remembered" illlustrates Jewish life in Europe before the Holocaust through reproductions of more than 100 photographs of the small town of Szczuczyn, Poland. These photographs capture the ordinary lives of the residents during the years leading up to the Nazi invasion, enjoying life, advancements in technology and living free of labels or hate. Upon close examination, one must wonder were their lives so different from our own?

Open to any child ages 3-12. Join us for a kick-off to summer. No educational lesson, just fun activities to enjoy! Make your own rain sticks, Winston Churchill bobble heads, and tie-dye tshirts. Be sure to stay afterwards to hear from our special guest Rachel Miller, a holocaust child survivor.
